Why implement Own the Bone?

Own the Bone is a Web-based quality improvement program designed to identify, evaluate and treat patients with osteoporosis and low bone density after fragility fractures. The Own the Bone measures are consistent with recommendations from the National Osteoporosis Foundation, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Joint Commission, the World Health Organization, and the American Medical Association.  Click here to view the measures. Own the Bone was specifically developed to make the current recommendations easy to implement. By simply entering information in the Web-based data registry, your institution can immediately quantify results and begin to see how the measures can positively affect patient care.

Providing patients with the latest evidence-based care is the right thing to do.  “Failure to diagnose” osteoporosis associated with related fractures is likely to become a key quality of care and professional liability issue for hospitals and physicians. Implementing higher quality standards before you are required to do so could be a sound medical and business decision.  Own the Bone provides you the opportunity to inform the public that bone health is a priority within your institution and fragility fracture patients are screened, and if appropriate, treated for low bone mass or osteoporosis.

Own the Bone can integrate into your institution's current routines with a few easy steps:

1. Identify patients age 50+ present with a low impact or fragility fracture resulting from a fall from standing height or less, that results in a fracture

2. Screen, educate and treat patients

3. Enter patient information into a Web-based registry (a 2-page note taking form is provided to facilitate data collection)

4. Follow up with patients (recommended; not required)
